Thesis #2 Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” is the a novel that explores ideas of struggle to find oneself during the time of the 1990’s as well of today.

Chopin novel gave me a sense of traditional ways of marriage and lifestyle. Mrs. Mallard was a woman who lived our life through marriage. She knew her duties as a wife and had to follow her husbands lead in the 1900’s. She had no voice and no sense of life without her husband being involved. This is how it was in the society where she lived. When she got the news that her husband was dead she went through a session of mourning. She loved him and felt abandoned instantly. However, when she came to and realized that’s she free. Imagery of the birds singing and the realization that she can do whatever she wants. There’s no one who can hold her sense of being. She starts develop herself and it shaped her to symbolized that its not the end but her beginning.

SSRJ #2 Colette "The Hand"

My initial response is wow! She’s been married three times??? I started forming questions on what this short story can be about. However, she seemed shallow it was some symbolism in the story. "The Hand" it was a lot of comparison to animal features. Her words to me were mean. "It's so big! It really is bigger than my whole head." she has given so much attention to his physical appearance instead of the love he may of had for her.

Literary Element/Thematic Analysis: As I stated before I saw a lot of symbolism to the hand in the story. The comparison it to animal features and how it was bigger than her whole body. She was disgusted to know what she was married to. As she stated "And I've kissed that hand... How horrible! Haven’t I ever looked at it?" The whole time they were in the bed together just sleeping. In this story she just was caught up in the moment and not focusing on there relationships but just his beauty. "To meet a handsome, blond young man, recently widowed good at tennis and rowing, to marry him a month later."

Question: Was the husband dead the whole time? He wasn't doing anything through out the whole story.
